Celebrating Excellence: The 2024 Faculty Awards | Dartmouth (2024)

Forty-two faculty members across Dartmouth have been recognized recently for their scholarship and work with students. The awards honor their contributions to the university, including their extraordinary achievements as teachers, scholars, and mentors.

“This year’s faculty award recipients demonstrate the profound dedication to teaching and research that Dartmouth so strongly values,” says Provost David Kotz ’86. “Their commitment to students and their impactful scholarship resonate throughout the institution, their fields of study, and beyond.”

This year’s awardees are:

Arts and Sciences

Dean of Faculty Award for Exceptional Service
Honors exceptional service that is distinguished by achievements of unique significance to Dartmouth.

  • Jay Hull, the Dartmouth Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences
  • Christine Thomas, associate professor of philosophy

Dean of Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentoring and Advising
Awarded to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding contributions to Dartmouth and career distinction.

  • Elizabeth Cascio, the DeWalt H. 1921 and Marie H. Ankeny Professor of Economic Policy

Dean of Faculty Teaching Award

Awarded to a non-tenure-line faculty in recognition of outstanding contributions to Dartmouth and career distinction.

  • Hafiz Farel Shabazz, adjunct associate professor of music

Elizabeth Howland Hand-Otis Norton Pierce Award
Awarded to a member of the faculty who, in the opinion of the trustees, is an outstanding teacher of undergraduates.

  • Colin Calloway, the John Kimball Jr. 1943 Professor of History and professor of Native American studies

Frank J. Guarini Award for Extraordinary Contribution to Off-Campus Programs
Awarded to a faculty member who has made significant efforts to advance the mission of Dartmouth’s international and domestic off-campus study programs for undergraduates.

  • Edward Miller, associate professor of history and Asian studies

Jerome Goldstein Award for Distinguished Teaching
Voted on by the undergraduate senior class (’24s).

  • Richard Beaudoin, assistant professor of music

John M. Manley Huntington Award for Newly Promoted Faculty
Awarded to a faculty member recently promoted to full professor who has outstanding teaching and research records.

  • Vievee Francis, professor of English and creative writing

John M. Manley Huntington Award for Newly Tenured Faculty
Awarded to a recently tenured faculty member who has an outstanding record of teaching and research.

  • Jeremy Manning, associate professor of psychological and brain sciences
  • Kathleen Powers, associate professor of government

Karen E. Wetterhahn Memorial Award for Distinguished Creative or Scholarly Achievement
Awarded to a newly tenured faculty member with outstanding scholarship.

  • Luis Alvarez León, associate professor of geography
  • Marisa Palucis, associate professor of earth sciences

Robert A. Fish 1918 Memorial Prize
Awarded to a newly retired faculty member to commemorate a career of contributions to undergraduate teaching at Dartmouth.

  • Susan Ackerman, the Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion, Emerita

Geisel School of Medicine

Ann J. Davis Faculty Award
Given by the graduating class to a member of the Geisel faculty who truly champions the student voice.

  • Lawrence Myers, professor of medical education and professor of biochemistry and cell biology

Basic Science Teaching Award
Selected by graduating students, this honors a basic science faculty member distinguished for excellence in teaching medical students.

Clinical Science Teaching Award
Selected by graduating students, this honors a clinical science faculty member distinguished for excellence in teaching medical students.

  • Kari Rosenkranz, associate professor of surgery

Dartmouth-Mosenthal Surgical Society Fellow
Given to faculty exemplifying William T. Mosenthal’s responsibility for the welfare of patients, scientific curiosity, passion for teaching, commitment to lifelong learning, and devotion to Dartmouth.

Departmental Clerkship Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Geisel Student Learning
These awards are given annually to the faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and outstanding commitment to medical student learning in the Year 3 and 4 clerkships.

  • H. Paul Chin, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry
  • Megan Donohue, assistant professor of neurology
  • Frances Faro, assistant professor of orthopaedics
  • David Kehas, clinical instructor in community and family medicine
  • Kristin Reese, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics
  • William Rosenblatt, clinical instructor in medicine
  • Richard Saunders, assistant professor of medicine
  • Erik Shessler, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics

Everett Koop Courage Award, Faculty Recipient
Honoring a faculty member whose courage in serving the public good continues the spirit of C. Everett Koop ’37, the former surgeon general.

  • Christi Hayes, assistant professor of medicine

Excellence in Career Advising Award
Recognizing a faculty specialty adviser for outstanding work in advising students during the residency application process, and in facilitating student professional development throughout their time at Geisel.

  • Alicia Dagrosa, assistant professor of dermatology and assistant professor of medical education

Joseph F. O’Donnell Faculty Award
Given to a member of the Geisel faculty who prioritizes a culture of respect and care, advancing the mission of the school through their work with students.

  • Roshini Pinto-Powell, associate dean of admissions, co-director of On Doctoring, professor of medicine, and professor of medical education

Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, Faculty Recipient, presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation
Given to a faculty member in recognition of their compassion, empathy, respect, and cultural sensitivity in the delivery of care to patients and their families while exhibiting the attributes of a scientifically excellent physician.

Master of Public Health Teaching Excellence Awards
Each graduating class selects faculty members to honor for inclusive, transformative teaching.

Thomas P. Almy Housestaff Teaching Award
Honoring the member of the house staff selected by students to be most distinguished for maintaining a commitment to medical student education and serving as an intellectual and ethical role model.

Distinguished Research Award for Faculty
Honors scholarly achievements that demonstrate notable discoveries or research accomplishments through publication, citation, or issued patents.

Diversity and Inclusion Award
Recognizes outstanding leadership, commitment, and efforts to raise awareness for and address issues of equity and inclusion at Thayer.
