Decode the science of softness, by understanding your skin’s needs
- Written by Bina Thakur
When it comes to moisturising your skin, the debate on using a cream or a lotion continues. Whether you are tackling stubborn dryness or just aiming for smooth, hydrated skin all over, understanding the differences between the two will help you make the best choice for your skin.
Pune-based dermatologist Dr Santosh Patani says, “Skincare is not one-size-fits-all. Understanding your skin’s unique needs is the first step to healthy skin.” According to him, the key difference lies in theirwater-to-oil ratio. Creams are thicker and richer, making them ideal for intensive hydration, while lotions are lighter and more fluid, better suited for everyday use.
Understanding the basics
Our skin serves as a physical barrier that shields the tissues and organs from various environmental stressors. This well-oiled machine has its own hydration system in place. Water moves up from deeper skin or epidermal layers to keep the outer layer (stratum corneum) hydrated. This process is important to prevent dryness and maintain skin elasticity. However, a malfunction of this process where the water evaporates quickly, also called trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), can lead to a dry and compromised skin barrier. This is where moisturisers become important. They maintain the skin’s natural barrier, preventing water loss and keeping the skin healthy and supple.
However, using the wrong type can lead to ineffective results. While both creams and lotions are designed to hydrate and nourish the skin, they differ in composition, texture, and purpose.
Dr Patani emphasises that the right choice often depends on the skin’s current condition and the season. “While creams are excellent for tackling specific skin issues, lotions are versatile and ideal for daily maintenance. Using both in your routine can ensure your skin stays balanced and nourished year-round,” he says.
Conclusion
Whether you need a thick cream for deep hydration or a light lotion for general use, remember that both have their place in a well-rounded skincare routine. Pay attention to what your skin needs and treat it with the care it deserves.
