David was born on August 29, 1962 in Gastonia, NC to David Coleman Colvin, Sr. and Fannie Sue Falls Colvin. David was a fifth generation native of Gastonia and was proud of his heritage. He graduated from Ashbrook High School where he was an athlete and especially excelled in wrestling, having 47 pins in a two year period. He attended Appalachian State University on a wrestling scholarship. He also wrestled at North Carolina State University where he transferred into the School of Design.
