Discover where it all began

Soar through the clouds and witness the origins of the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD. This classic quest has been enhanced for NintendoSwitch with smoother motion controls, as well as newly-added button controls.

Every legend has an origin

Depicting the earliest tale in The Legend of Zelda timeline, a young knight must journey between the endless sky and the mythical surface below in search of his childhood friend, Zelda. As their destiny unfolds, a wicked plan to resurrect an ancient evil force is set in motion, orchestrated by a mysterious demon lord…

Link

The newest graduate of the Skyloft Knight Academy and one of Zelda’s closest friends.

Zelda

A fellow student of the Knight Academy, although destiny has different plans for her…

Fi

The spirit of the Goddess Sword, entrusted to guide Link in his quest.

Ghirahim

A self-proclaimed demon lord, determined to capture Zelda no matter what the cost.

Impa

A mysterious warrior with a shrouded past, set on protecting Zelda from harm.

Groose

A rival to Link – from the Knight Academy to Zelda’s friendship – and a born troublemaker.

Play your way

Choose from two unique ways to experience this epic adventure. Swing your sword and angle your slashes with intuitive motion controls that match your movements or – for the first time – take advantage of the newly-added button controls, ideal for playing in handheld mode or on Nintendo Switch Lite.

Enhanced motion controls put you in the middle of the action. Swing the right Joy-Con to swing your sword in-game and use the left Joy-Con to raise your shield to block enemy attacks. Physical movements like these can also be used with items, such as wielding a bow and arrow or rolling bombs along the ground.

Using button controls offers a more traditional The Legend of Zelda experience, with sword swings controlled using the Right Stick – just tilt it in a chosen direction.

As above, so below

Take to the skies on your trusty Loftwing and visit islands dotted on the horizon, then dive down to the fabled surface and trek through forests, deserts, volcanoes and more. Befriend new allies, uncover hidden secrets and cut down myriad monsters on your journey to stop Ghirahim’s nefarious plan.

Into the unknown

Hidden deep within each surface region lies a sprawling dungeon packed with fearsome fiends, treasures and puzzles design to test the bravest of heroes. Defeat the guardian waiting for you at the end of each dungeon and you’ll be one step closer to saving the world.

Tools of the trade

As you explore the surface beneath Skyloft, you’ll discover a range of useful weapons, gadgets and items that’ll help you. With the right materials, some can even be upgraded to unlock their true potential.

Bow

Essential for picking off enemies or hitting objects at a great distance.

Bombs

Lob through the air or roll along the floor like a bowling ball to clear a path.

Beetle

Use this flying wrist-bound bug to grab and carry items. With upgrades, it can carry bombs, fly faster and travel further.

Bug Net

Snag bugs and other small items with this, before using those materials to make potions or upgrade items.

Clawshots

Great for grabbing objects and grappling targets or vines to access areas otherwise out of reach.

Digging Mitts

Use these to unearth items or upgrade them to burrow through the ground, smashing rocks or hitting switches as you go.

Gust Bellows

Blast out a ferocious gust of wind to keep smaller enemies at bay, reveal weak points in larger ones or uncover items hidden in sand.

Sailcloth

Allows you to land safely after falling from great heights. Use it near wind gusts or geysers to reach areas far above you.

Whip

Swing over gaps, retrieve distant items, pull out-of-reach levers, or use it to punish your foes.

A classic adventure, redefined

The LegendofZelda: SkywardSwordHD takes the classic quest and optimises it for Nintendo Switch, improving the experience in a number of ways including:

  • Enhanced performance
  • Improved motion controls with the Joy-Con controllers
  • All-new button controls, allowing you to choose your style of play
  • Various quality-of-life enhancements, including refinements to player tutorials and general guidance throughout the adventure

Compatible with amiibo

The Zelda & Loftwing amiibo (sold separately) can be used at any time while exploring the overworld or dungeons to create a checkpoint and return to the sky. Tapping the amiibo again while in the sky or visiting one of the many floating islands above the clouds returns you to the checkpoint you previously created.

FAQs

Is Skyward Sword a good switch? ›

Despite their imperfections, 'Skyward Sword' and its HD remaster are memorable games. It took some getting used to, but the button-only controls worked well for me. Rather than swing a Joy-Con, I could simply tilt the control stick to influence my sword swings.
